Work looks set to start on a new canal-side project for Salford, Manchester.
Having gained planning approval back in 2008, the Soapworks project on Ivy Wharf between Media City and the Ordsall Riverside will see the old Colgate/Palmolive factory regenerated into sparkly new office space for it's first phase, with retail space, restaurants and residential spaces added.
Centrally located on the Salford Quays, which is considered by many to be Manchester�s equivalent of London�s Canary Wharf thanks to its "out of town nature", the project will see the exterior appearance of the factory change with extensions being added to accommodate the new uses.
While some of the distinctive red brick work will remain on the facades, the design is heavy on glazing opening the oppressive factory setting up to the light. The iconic chimney displaying the Soapworks sign will remain untouched giving it a proto-industrial look that harks back to how things used to be in Salford.
The project, which has been designed by ShedKM, is a venture between the Carlyle Group, Abstract Securities and Nikal, will provide over 50,000 square metres of space when completed leaving plenty of the 8.4 acre site left over for future additions.
The first phase of the project will see the boiler house section converted into office space with the retail and entertainment sections following in later phases.
